2ND ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT

Reports to: Superintendent

General Summary: Direct and participate in the upkeep and maintenance of the golf course. Assist the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent in the daily maintenance of the golf course.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

Operate powered equipment in mowing golf course putting greens, aprons, tees, fairways, roughs and water hazards.
Fertilize putting greens, aprons, fairways and roughs.
Course setup.
Spray chemicals on greens, tees, fairways and roughs.
Assist in construction of new greens, tees and fairways by preparing soil, grading, sodding and seeding.
Bunker maintenance.
Irrigation repair and maintenance.

Other Functions:

Assist in the supervision of greenskeepers and landscape staff.
Actively involved with operation of irrigation system and watering.
Perform cultural practices including aerification and topdressing.

Specific Job Skills:

Requires operating all types of maintenance and some construction equipment.
Must be able to spot and diagnose the various types of diseases in turf grasses.
Have an understanding of the various chemicals used to combat the different pests and fungi that attack turf grasses.
Vision, standing, lifting, walking, talking, hearing and mobility are all vital roles in golf course maintenance.
Able to do simple mathematical computations.

Education and/or Experience:

One season of golf course maintenance.
Certified or licensed in pesticide usage or ability to obtain.

Job Conditions:

Working in all types of weather conditions.
Working with pesticides, chemicals, paints.
Working weekends and holidays.
Standing for extended periods of time.
Occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
Requires operating complex machinery.
Operating hazardous machinery.
Dirty working environment involves sweeping debris, laying sod, mixing plant bed material, sand traps and sanding and grinding in the shop.

Interpersonal Contacts: There will be occasional contact with the members, other staff and general public. This contact will be on a one-on-one or group basis consisting of simple non-confidential information exchange.
